Artist Statement
The prints and paintings I produced for this show depict themes connecting to tea and comfort. I want to create works of art that illustrate my love for tea through the use of ingredients in a realistic style yet influenced by surrealism and pop art.
The paintings are a set of circle canvases of acrylic medium. The subject of Tea expressed in acrylic allows for my work to look realistic yet draw the line in appearing graphic. The medium offers the chance to paint loose in style and in a glowing high contrast of color manner which is achieved through the effect of phosphorescent paint. The larger paintings of tea exploring themes of adventure and wonder. The paintings utilize distortion in size to emphasize ingredients that benefit an individual's body in a visual manner.
The prints illustrate parts of tea and movement. Printmaking has given me the opportunity to be flexible and creates movement through defined lines. While this can be achieved In acrylic, in print my works are controlled and not as loose compared to my style in paint. The print medium showcases tea in a manner that is concise. This approach with etching allowed me to be careful and attentive as any marks can be shown rather than covered up.
The Etchings depict tea straight forward, in wonder and exploration. While there are differences in the approach for both print and acrylic, the idea created, to attract visually through the use of colors and boldness of lines, the underlying theme of tea and sanctuary. Tea is different within an individual’s eyes. My hope is that when these works are viewed, people will feel a sense of identity and belonging as these series of artworks may not be everyone's cup of Tea.
