Artist statement

This collection of work is a series of colorful and creative characters. I choose painting, digital, and photography as my mediums for this particular collection because these mediums work best for me for creating my characters and scenes during this pandemic. During my time as a UOG Fine Arts student I worked to improve my abilities in drawing, painting, and sculpting. I would use any medium to turn my thoughts into an artwork. A physical piece for others to see and share in my creativity.

I create simplistic, graphic, and caricaturized art to imitate the youthful charm of the colorful and playful characters from my childhood. These artworks have a mix of playfulness and surreal themes to showcase imagination. Few of my pieces use photography to demonstrate how I see made up characters interact with my real-world surrounding, an expression of my imaginative mind. The characters and scenes I create were influenced from the stories, popular culture, and personal experiences from growing up through the 90’s and 2000’s. When I make these artworks I create some feeling of nostalgia and reconnect to my younger self. I produce these kind of artworks to escape into my creative process and fictitious worlds. As I grow older, I find that making art helps reduce my stress that comes from growing older. My creative process reconnects me to my childhood memories, the time when stories gave me a sensation of wonder and awe. I hope to give a viewer back a piece of their inner child and open their imagination with my artworks.

Artist biography

Born on the island of Guam in September 23, 1996. I grew up on the island which had a melting pot of cultures, which would influence the art I admired and the artists I gain inspirationn from. Throughout my childhood I enjoyed watching many cartoons and animated movies. My art style evolved from redrawing many of my favorite characters. I started to produce original concepts and characters sometime in high school. Studying under the Fine Arts Program at the University of Guam I was able to hone into my style and find opportunities to gain new artistic experiences. I showcased in my University's gallery in past events. I currently work as a caricature artist and do commissioned art at local conventions. I draw inspiration from Japanese anime artists, who use of exaggerated eyes and simplified facial features, and contemporary western cartoonists and street artist who use bright colors and stylized lines.
